McKenzie Towne Needs a Middle School!
If we want our children to go to middle school in their own community and not bussed down the Deerfoot every day we need to act now. CBE has changed their ranking system and we are moving down the list. We need to write our MLA's, our school trustee and any other provincially elected representative you can think of. We have been told that the amount of emails received really make a difference!
Email, Write a letter, Tweet! Whatever method you choose, just do it!

Thank you to all who attended the School Council Meeting last night.
We learned all about the what the Grade 4's are up to including their exciting "Fossiloligy" project. Thank you to Mrs. Barr and Mrs. Kruger for their report.
Dr. Slatter and Mrs. Reichardt reported on all the "happenings" in the school. The success of 3 Left Feet Dance Residency (Grades 3 & 4) and the Parent Night held last week. They also informed us of some very useful resources available to students and parents of CBE students. Please visit CBE's main website, under student link, then CORE Resources to gain access to these resources. Thank you Dr. Slatter and Mrs. Reichardt for keeping us well informed!
A big HOORAY for all our little Ghosts and Goblins who went door to door collecting money for Habitat for Humanity. The Committee gleefully announced that over $4,500.00 was raised in that Campaign!
The Habitat for Humanity Committee's next fundraiser will be at the Christmas Concert selling yummy cookies and hot chocolate. Thank you to the Habitat for Humanity Committee for educating and inspiring our children to have a sense of "Community".

Call for volunteers - Traffic Safety Week
We need a couple volunteers to help encourage street safety at Mckenzie Towne School in a fun way by reinforcing safe practices. If you have a few minutes to spare next week before or after school next week we are looking for a couple more volunteers for these times: Monday to Friday 8:00 - 8:25am and after school Tuesday 2:55 - 3:20pm and Friday 12 - 12:30pm
We are running the Positive Pointers program during Calgary School Traffic Awareness Week, where volunteers will hand out "tickets" to people they see practising safe traffic or crossing habit, as seen below. The tickets can be completed and return to the school and entered into a draw.
Please let Jenn at vicechair@mtsparents.com know which time (or times) you can spare a few minute to help encourage our school to set an example for our community. Jenn will answer any questions regarding the commitments and will brief the volunteers on their duties.
Check out this link for tips to earn your tickets when manoeuvring around the school next week.

SUTP Time Again!
Last week the students were sent home with the SUTP Order forms. This is an amazing fundraising opportunity for our school as we receive 50% of proceeds from every book sold. school.
This year the incentive is an ipod touch entry for every book sold.
Order forms are due back by October 11, 2013. You can send your order in at anytime. We return the envelope so when you get more you can resend it.

Helping Kids After A Natural Disaster
As kids sometimes it is difficult to express the feelings they have towards life events. This article by the National Association of School Psychologists was written to help kids (and families) work through some of the chaos and emotions that happen after a natural disaster. Please feel free to share with anyone you think may benefit from this.

MTSC and MTSPA Meeting Recap
Monday night was a full night of discussion. It was one of those meetings you didn't want to miss. Some of the topics discussed in the School Council included: Traffic updates and a Grade 4 graduation legacy project to continue into future years. There was also a presentation on the need for computers and added technology to bring MTS up to standards with the rest of the CBE.
Ms. Pollock and Ms. Kruger talked about the live creatures they are working with their students to raise. The grade 2's currently have 4 ducks they watched hatch and will raise for 3 weeks in their classroom. The Grade 1's are raising butterflies.
The Leadership update included a breakdown of the classroom structure for next year. They also discussed a new program MTS will be doing next year called Safe and Caring School. We were chosen for a 1 year scholarship with this program. It will involve staff resources, training and a parent event.
Teacher Appreciation will be on June 19th. There is also a Talent Show that afternoon.
MTSPA made many motions to fund various school projects including technology, beautification, and a free fun lunch. June 20 will be the Stampede celebration with the Stampede crew coming out to teach line dancing. This includes pancakes done by the Batter Boys. September 6, 2013 will be our muffin mixer for parents to meet up before classes start that first week of back to school.
Our Casino request for volunteers was very successful having all positions filled!!!!
Many of our School Council / Parent Association positions are coming open in September. Please email any of us if you would like information on various positions. The links are on the left hand side of our blog. We will post a full list of positions at a later date. The one position that really needs to be filled earlier is the Treasurer as there is some training that needs to happen.
Our June mtg has been suspended. So our next meeting will be the AGM on September 30, 2013

Meeting Reminder, Monday night 6:30pm
Its going to be a busy night as the school year gets another month closer to winding down. Come out and hear from Grade 1 and 2 teachers Mrs. Karmen Kruger and Ms. Kendra Pollock share classroom experiences.
Our leadership report will preview the school organization, talk about how MTS staff and students are paying forward, and let us know about a new program the school will be participating in to continue strengthening the nurturing nature of our school.
We will try to rap up spending for the year in order to start budgeting for the next, looking at how to use the fun lunch surplus and other loose ends.
Many positions on the council and parents association will be opening up as parents move to the middle school with their children or take on other challenges with the council and parents association. This will be a great meeting to join and see what each of the positions are about. Being apart of this process is a great way to make change and support the things you happiest about at MTS.
Hope to see you there.

March Meeting Recap
To kick off the MTS School Council Meeting we
heard from Mrs. Phelan and Ms. Youngstrom about what our Grade 3 students are currently
focusing on with regards to "The Elements of Story" and "Math in
our World"!
Dr. Slater and Mrs. Reichardt
shared some exciting updates with us! Our school now has a snow-blower in
addition to our snow-removal tractor. This means that when there are heavy
snowfalls Sandy will have an alternative to snow-removal over the tractor which
gets repeatedly stuck in large depths of snow. Much of our snow removal still
has to be done by hand so please be patient.
More exciting news!! Our school
will be receiving it's final set of relocatables this year! They should be up
and ready for use come September!
In preparation for Tony
Bromhead, principal of David Thompson Middle School, coming to address our
Parent Council next month there was much discussion about topics we would like
him address. If you have comments you would like passed on please forward them
to Jenn R. (vicechair@mtsparents.com) or Sean T. (chair@mtsparents.com).
Mr. Bromhead will make a presentation and will also be prepared for a time of
Q&A following, if you want to hear more about David Thompson Middle School
please plan to attend our next meeting Monday, April 29th at 6:30 PM
Our Coco Brooks fundraiser will
be ready to pick up soon! If you ordered pizzas please be prepared to pick them up April 9th between
the hours of 6:30 - 8:00 in the teachers parking lot at the west end of the
school. For food safety reasons we cannot have the frozen pizzas out of a
freezer any longer than this time window and the MTSPA has no way of storing
pizzas that are not picked up so please set a reminder.

Reminder - Council & Parent Assoc, Meeting Monday at 6:30pm
March meeting topics: Grade 3 teachers present, initial highlights of CBE Budget and expected impacts, and gathering parents' questions in advance of David Thompson presentation next month.
Grade Three teachers presenting this month are Ms. Monica Youngstrom and Mrs. Jeanette Phelan.
Our leadership team will update us with CBEs initial reaction to the Provincial Budget.
Lastly there has been much discussion around the transition of MTS students to middle school. To address parents’ question the principal of David Thompson, Mr. Tony Bromhead will be our special guest presenter at our council meeting on April 29th. We would like Mr. Bromhead to focus his presentation on any question or concerns parents might have. Therefore, please bring your questions to this Monday’s meeting so he has time to prepare April’s presentation focused on your questions.
Thank you for your support of the Coco Brooks Fundraiser.

February Meeting Recap
During the MTS School Council Meeting Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Klassen gave a brief outline of what the students in Grade 4 are focusing on. They also discussed some things the grade 4's do to prepare for the transition into Middle School.
Dr. Slater and Ms. Reichart discussed new clubs starting up for students, Kindergarten enrollment and a dance residency for the end of May. The Apegga Science night happening on April 11 from 6-8 is a drop in environment so come when you can and stay as long as you want.
The City of Calgary is doing a Pilot Program for school bus zones. Our Vice Chair has been in talks with the City about MTS being a great school to pilot with. The outlook is positive but we need parents to contact the city encouraging them to use our school.
The Parent Council has decided to provide supper for the Teacher's / Staff during the upcoming Student Lead Conferences. They also approved the request to support the dance residency in May. Our Fundraising Committee and our school families have done a spectacular job raising funds to support our school this year. They have another fundraiser starting this week with the extremely popular Coco Brooks Pizza. Start loading up on your orders!
Our Treasurer position will be open come September. If you are interested in taking this position it is beneficial to you to contact her now to be orientated on what is involved. If you want to know more about the position please contact Sherry at treasurer@mtsparents.com

Next meeting will be March 18 at 6:30-8:30.

January 28, 2013 Meeting Recap
McKenzie Towne School Council and Parent Association has many positions opening up this year. Now is the time to come in and talk to the people leaving their positions to find out what they do. Some positions - like Treasurer need to be orientated before they can fully take on the position. Some of the positions projected for openings are Treasurer, President, Fundraising Director and possible others. The Council Members sign up for 2 year terms. Having been on the council now for almost 2 years I can speak honestly when I say it is the best way to find out what is happening in the school and we really do help guide where the school goes. Our School Leadership Team listens and this truly is a partnership.
The Parent Association discussed options for Fun Lunch next year. The Fundraising Director updated us on fundraising initiatives from the past and for the rest of the year. If any of you have Auction items to be donated for the Valentine's Dance please contact us so we can include you. (Sandy (smconrad@hotmail.com) or Joanna (joanna4@shaw.ca)
Our next meeting will be held February 25, 2013 from 6:30-8:30
